MISSION AND GOALS OF HGSC

Mission Statement
Healthy Girls Santa Cruz aims to provide services that support girls' healthy development, with a focus on body image, self- esteem, relationships, self- care and leadership skill development.

Vision
Schools that provide opportunities for learning that support students’ emotional and physical well-being.

Goals
1) Expanding prevention and intervention services:
HGSC aims to offer year-round programs for girls from middle school through high school to support their development into healthy, powerful adult women.

We are currently offering Full of Ourselves (FOO), a semester-long curriculum that aims to improve middle school girls' self and body acceptance, encourage healthier eating and exercise habits, and teach girls leadership skills. FOO is currently being piloted at several Santa Cruz County middle schools as an after-school program.

Additional programs we plan to offer include:
Girls Circle: a “best practice” research-based program focusing on increasing connections, building empathetic skills, and developing resiliency. Includes nine 8-12 week curriculums addressing a variety of issues from “honoring our diversity” to “frienship” to “mind-body-spirit.”.

Girls For A Change Action Teams This year-long program gives girls the opportunity to identify a challenge in their community and, as a team, with the guidance and support of an adult mentor, create and implement a project that addresses this challenge.

Girl RetreatsWe would like to offer weekend retreats for girls to have fun, bond, and celebrate their accomplishments at the end of the year.

2)Increasing access to resources:
HGSC aims to increase access to resources for girls who are struggling with issues related to body image and self- esteem. We plan to provide training to teachers and school psychologists on the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, depression, and related issues, and what adults can do to help. School staff members will be armed with resources for students including:

  • Contact information for local psychotherapists who specialize in the issues facing adolescent girls
  • Contact information for local and national organizations that provide information and support for girls and their families on issues girls face.

3) Enhancing community awareness:
HGSC is forming alliances with other community organizations such as United Way, and The Girls Task Force to create a network of support services for girls in Santa Cruz County.

4) Empowering youth and families:
HGSC will provide educational workshops for parents on the issues girls face as they enter adolescence, and how parents can best support girls’ healthy development. HGSC will also provide a website that offers information and resources for girls and their families relating to girls’ health.

5) Organization Resources:
In order to effectively accomplish the above goals, HGSC will raise funds through grants, donations and fundraising projects.

6) Research:
HGSC will collaborate with researchers to examine and document the effects of our programming.
