Teens today grow up in a culture of eating and body disturbance. HGSC is here to stop girls from obsessing about food and their bodies and to help them to get passionate about life and engaged in the world in meaningful ways.

* 60% of teen girls are on a diet

* Over half the females aged 18-25 would rather be run over by a truck than be fat. Two thirds would rather be mean or stupid.

* 45% of girls who are smoking cigarettes are smoking as a form of weight control

*The average American model is 5'11," weighs 117 lbs and wears a size 6. The average American woman is 5'4," weighs 140 lbs and wears a size 12-14.

*43 % of normal- weight 13-year old girls are trying to lose weight

* 23% of those who are underweight think they are fat.

*Americans spend $50 billion on diet and weight loss products every year

*8.5 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in 2001 alone, 88% on women. Liposuction was the most popular procedure, followed by breast augmentation.

*In a study of female students at Stanford University, 70% reported feeling worse about their bodies after looking at fashion magazines.
