HGSC’s current programs and plans are aligned with the “Vision and Priorities for 2007-2010” set forth by Michael Watkins, Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools, in several respects. We aim to “expand education and support services” (goal 3.4) to an underserved student population (girls) by offering girl- specific programs like Full of Ourselves. This program aims to “improve the physical fitness, health and nutrition of Santa Cruz County youth” (goal 3.9) through lessons on nutrition and exercise as well as an introduction to yoga and meditation.

HGSC aims to create a network of services that “reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity, promote healthy eating habits, and encourage life-long physical activity” for girls in collaboration with organizations to like the United Way, Go for Health, community health agencies and health professionals, parent groups and districts (goal 3.9a).

On Thursday, October 25, HGSC held its first “Parent Night.” HGSC plans to hold regular sessions for girls’ parents to come together and voice their experiences, needs, and concerns, and also to offer information about raising strong, healthy girls. In this way, HGSC will be instituting a community forum to “improve communication and better identify and address parent and community needs” (goal 4.2).
